Danish maritime equipment firms eye India’s upcoming shipbuilding clusters
Several Danish companies specializing in vessel equipment and propulsion systems are setting their sights on India following the government’s announcement of a ₹70,000 crore support package and ambitious goals for the maritime industry. Denmark’s Ambassador to India, Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, shared this information, highlighting the significant interest from Danish players in India’s maritime potential.
Exploring Diverse Opportunities in India
Denmark, known for its robust maritime economy, hosts AP Moller-Maersk, a global shipping and terminal giant based in Copenhagen. Additionally, Danish companies already active in India are keen on expanding their presence in sectors like ship recycling, port decarbonisation, onshore power, green fuels, and maritime technology, as outlined by Ambassador Kristensen during a recent press briefing.
Major Danish enterprises operating in India include APM Terminals, a subsidiary of AP Moller-Maersk, managing India’s inaugural private port in Pipavav, Gujarat. Notably, the company unveiled a $2 billion expansion plan for the port in the previous year.
Strategic Moves and Collaborations
In the realm of ship recycling, Indian shipyards in Alang are witnessing substantial demand, with two yards recently added to the European Union’s approved list. Furthermore, Danish carriers are closely monitoring India’s ship recycling sector, anticipating future engagements in the coming years.
The Indian government’s ₹25,000 crore shipbuilding financial assistance program, integrated into the support package, emphasizes the need for a considerable portion of ships to be domestically manufactured.
