Transforming the River Port, LLC Shipyard
Goleta, CALIF., September 22, 2026 – Bardex Corporation has been awarded the contract to supply a state-of-the-art shiplift system for River Port, LLC at its Newport News facility. The shiplift, with a lifting capacity exceeding 25,000 metric tons, will be operated by East Coast Repair & Fabrication, LLC (ECR), a leading ship repair company affiliated with River Port. This investment marks a significant step in expanding the facility’s shipbuilding, maintenance, repair, and fleet support capabilities.
A Leap in Shipbuilding Infrastructure
The new shiplift, once completed, will transform the existing dry dock facility into a NAVSEA Certified Facility, positioning River Port as a key player in regional shipbuilding and repair operations. With a focus on accommodating larger vessels and enhancing operational efficiency, the Bardex OmniLift® shiplift will feature forty-eight 640-ton lift stations and a substantial platform measuring approximately 450ft x 110ft (137m x 33.5m). This innovative system is designed to offer precise load control, reliability, operational flexibility, and maximum life cycle value.
Setting a New Standard in Shipyard Capabilities
Unlike traditional wire rope-based shiplifts, the Bardex OmniLift system incorporates cutting-edge linear chain jack technology to ensure synchronized and controlled lifting without the reliance on wire ropes as the primary lifting medium. The system’s motion control technology enhances safety, stability, and reliability under real-world conditions, with a flawless safety record since its inception in 1967. In addition to vessel lifting, the project includes the development of a rail-based transfer system with multiple onshore hardstand berths to expand ECR’s maintenance capacity at River Port. Bardex will oversee the engineering design, equipment manufacture, controls, installation support, commissioning, training, and life cycle support for the project, with commissioning expected by September 2028.
