HJ Shipbuilding Secures Major European Order
HJ Shipbuilding & Construction announced on the 27th that it has secured a significant contract from a European shipowner for the construction of two eco-friendly container ships, each with a capacity of 11,000 TEU. The total value of the order amounts to 357.2 billion won. This latest deal builds on a previous order for two similar vessels, showcasing the company’s growing presence in the eco-friendly shipping sector.
Innovative Eco-Friendly Design and Features
The newly ordered 11,000-TEU container ships will be constructed at HJ Shipbuilding‘s Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan. These vessels represent the largest size that can be built at this facility, following the company’s successful development of eco-friendly ships ranging from 7,700 to 9,000 TEU. Designed to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, the ships will be equipped with advanced scrubbers, a desulfurization system that complies with International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental regulations.
In addition to their eco-friendly features, the ships will incorporate an Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) system. This innovative technology allows the vessels to shut down their engines while docked, reducing air pollution by drawing electricity from shore instead. With this order, HJ Shipbuilding has now secured contracts for four 11,000-TEU container ships, positioning the company to benefit from efficiencies gained through repeat builds. Continuous production of the same ship type enhances design, procurement, and operational processes, ultimately boosting productivity and profitability.
Furthermore, HJ Shipbuilding has developed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel propulsion model based on the same hull design as the newly ordered vessels. This development aligns with the growing demand from shipowners for more sustainable and efficient shipping solutions. Yu Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, emphasized the company’s commitment to eco-friendly designs and high-efficiency production systems. He stated, “We will pursue a selective order strategy focused on profitability and further enhance competitiveness by delivering high-quality ships on time.”
