In memory of Claus Winter Graugaard
Mourning the Loss of a Maritime Leader
The maritime community, including the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, is deeply saddened by the passing of Claus Winter Graugaard on July 30th, 2024, at the age of 51. Claus was a respected leader in the maritime industry, recognized for his contributions as Chief Technology Officer – Onboard Vessel Solutions since joining the Center in January 2021. His unwavering commitment to advancing the industry’s transition to a sustainable future earned him admiration from colleagues and industry peers alike.
Claus’s extensive career as a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, with education from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the University of Strathclyde, saw him contribute significantly to organizations such as Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and J. Lauritzen A/S. His work spanned multiple countries, including Norway, Australia, and Japan, where he developed strong cross-cultural relationships and led strategic maritime projects. Claus was also actively involved with the Danish Shipowners’ Association and served on the boards of Star Management Associates and AXIS Offshore.

At the Center, Claus led the Onboard Vessel Solutions team, driving the development of innovative ship designs and solutions aimed at decarbonizing shipping. His leadership and collaboration with partner organizations played a crucial role in advancing sustainable practices within the maritime sector. Beyond his professional achievements, Claus was known for his warm personality and dedication to his family, friends, and community.
As the maritime industry mourns his loss, Claus’s legacy of courage, collaboration, and determination continues to inspire. The Center and the broader maritime community remain committed to advancing the vision of decarbonization that Claus passionately championed.
