India Signs ₹3,800 Crore Missile Deal with Indonesia

India has finalized a significant agreement to export BrahMos missiles worth approximately ₹3,800 crore (USD 450 million) to Indonesia. This deal highlights India’s growing defense capabilities, particularly in missile technology. The BrahMos missile, a joint venture between India and Russia, is one of the most advanced missile systems globally. India is among the few nations capable of constructing aircraft carriers independently, further solidifying its position in the defense sector.

Strengthening India-Indonesia Defense Ties

The agreement comes on the heels of recent discussions between Indian and Indonesian officials. During meetings held on January 26, Indonesian representatives expressed interest in collaborating on aircraft carrier construction. This interest aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to enhance defense cooperation with Jakarta. Indian officials are actively working to bolster ties in shipbuilding and other defense sectors.

Earlier this year, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited India as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers and business leaders. This visit underscored the importance of defense industry cooperation, which was a focal point of discussions. Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the need for joint exercises, training exchanges, and maintenance of common platforms.

Both nations also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) in five key areas: health, maritime, traditional medicine, digital development, and cultural exchange. These agreements reflect a broader commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi highlighted Indonesia’s role as a crucial partner in the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific regions. He reiterated the shared commitment to maintaining peace, security, and a rules-based order in the region, emphasizing the importance of freedom of navigation in accordance with international laws.

As India continues to expand its defense partnerships, the BrahMos missile deal with Indonesia marks a significant step in enhancing regional security and cooperation.
