Ingalls Shipbuilding Secures $283 Million Navy Contract
Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula has been awarded a significant $283 million contract to initiate preparations for the construction of the U.S. Navy’s new FF(X) class frigates. This contract enables the shipyard to procure essential long-lead materials, conduct design work, and commence pre-construction activities for the first vessel in this new class. The FF(X) frigates are poised to play a vital role in enhancing the Navy’s operational capabilities.
Strategic Importance of the FF(X) Class
The FF(X) class represents a new generation of smaller, more agile combat ships designed to complement the Navy’s larger multi-mission warships. These frigates aim to improve operational flexibility and responsiveness in various maritime environments. Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Blanchette expressed pride in the company’s track record of delivering warships that meet U.S. military standards. He emphasized that this contract reflects the Navy’s confidence in Ingalls as the lead yard for the FF(X) program, which is critical for the future of naval operations.
Under the terms of the contract, Ingalls will begin the process of cutting and shaping raw materials, laying the groundwork for the main structure foundation and overall construction sequencing of the first frigate. This proactive approach is expected to facilitate a seamless transition from design to production, not only at Ingalls Shipbuilding but also across the broader industrial base. The Navy’s decision to select Ingalls for this project follows the shipyard’s successful delivery of ten National Security Cutters to the U.S. Coast Guard, utilizing a similar build sequence for the FF(X) program.
Investment in Future Capabilities
To meet the urgent demands of the Navy and support the construction of next-generation platforms, Ingalls has invested over $1 billion in modernizing its infrastructure, facilities, and toolsets. This investment is part of a broader strategy by Ingalls’ parent company, HII, to expand U.S. shipbuilding capacity. HII is actively working to increase the number of distributed shipbuilding partners, collaborate with international manufacturers, and explore the possibility of adding another U.S. shipyard to its operations.
The FF(X) frigates will be constructed alongside existing production lines for DDG 51 Flight III destroyers, LHA assault ships, and LPD Flight II amphibious transport docks, as well as modernization efforts for the Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyers. This integration of new construction with ongoing projects is expected to enhance efficiency and support the Navy’s strategic objectives in maritime defense.
