Meaning of “Abaft”

The term “abaft” is a nautical or maritime term that refers to a location or position on a ship or boat. It indicates a direction or position behind or toward the rear of the vessel. Specifically, abaft is used to describe something located aft or behind a particular point on the ship.

In practical terms, when standing at the stern (rear) of a ship and looking forward, any point or object located toward the back of the ship is considered abaft. It is the opposite of “forward” or “ahead” on the vessel.

The term “abaft” can also be used more broadly in non-maritime contexts to refer to something situated or positioned behind or to the rear of a particular point or object. However, its usage is most commonly associated with ships and sailing.
