Nigerian Navy Can Construct Ships of World Class – Naval Chief

Nigerian Navy's Shipbuilding Capabilities Highlighted

The Nigerian Navy is making significant strides in local shipbuilding, according to Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). During a recent visit to the Naval Shipyard in Port Harcourt, he emphasized the Navy’s ability to produce ships that meet international standards. This visit aimed to assess ongoing operations and showcase the Navy’s commitment to enhancing its shipbuilding capabilities. Despite these advancements, Admiral Ogalla noted a concerning lack of public awareness regarding the Navy’s extensive shipbuilding and maintenance efforts. He called for increased attention and promotion of the Navy’s capabilities to ensure that the public recognizes the potential of local ship production.

Local Shipbuilding Efforts and Achievements

The Nigerian Navy has a long history of involvement in local shipbuilding and repairs. Admiral Ogalla highlighted that the Navy has constructed three regular warships at its Lagos dockyard and is currently in the process of building two Civil Defence Boats. These achievements demonstrate the Navy‘s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities while also contributing to the local economy. By investing in local shipbuilding, the Navy not only reduces reliance on foreign suppliers but also fosters job creation and skill development within the country.

However, Admiral Ogalla expressed concern that many individuals still travel abroad to purchase ships, largely due to a lack of awareness about the Navy’s capabilities. He pointed out that this “sea blindness” prevents potential customers from recognizing the quality and standards of locally built vessels. To address this issue, the Navy is actively working to raise awareness about its shipbuilding operations. The Chief of Naval Staff urged the shipyard and dockyard to engage in public relations efforts to enhance visibility and promote their achievements. By doing so, the Navy hopes to encourage more local procurement of ships and reduce the trend of overseas purchases.

Inspection of Facilities and Future Plans

During his visit to the Naval Shipyard, Admiral Ogalla conducted a thorough inspection of various facilities, including the administration block, Ibom ferry, slipway, and sick bay, which are currently under construction. He also reviewed three renovated boats and ten flat-bottom asphalt boats designated for Navy operations. This inspection allowed the Chief of Naval Staff to assess the progress of ongoing projects and ensure that the Navy is on track to meet its operational goals.

Admiral Ogalla’s visit underscores the importance of maintaining and upgrading naval facilities to support the Navy’s mission. The inspection revealed a commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the Navy’s capabilities. As the Navy continues to develop its shipbuilding operations, it remains focused on producing high-quality vessels that meet both national and international standards. The Chief of Naval Staff’s emphasis on public awareness and engagement is crucial for the Navy’s future success in local shipbuilding. By fostering a better understanding of its capabilities, the Nigerian Navy aims to solidify its position as a key player in the maritime industry.
