Offshore Operator Confirms PSV Incident Killed Two and Inured One
Offshore Vessel Incident Confirmed by Icon Offshore Berhad
Icon Offshore Berhad has recently confirmed an incident involving one of its offshore vessels, more than a week and a half after the accident occurred. The company faced criticism from local media for the delayed statement, which followed an incident on August 2 that resulted in the loss of two crew members.
According to reports, the accident occurred on the platform supply vessel Icon Amara, resulting in the deaths of an assistant engineer and an oiler. A second oiler sustained burns over 30 percent of his body and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. The 3,500 dwt vessel, built in 2011, is one of two operated by the company to service the Sarawak oil and gas fields.
MPA continues to extend its support to the US Coast Guard and local authorities
The incident took place near the Sapar Alpha platform, close to Bintulu, at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time. Local authorities reported that an explosion, believed to have occurred in the engine room, was so powerful that it blew the door off its hinges. Crew members who responded to the scene found the three individuals unconscious amid thick smoke. Despite being rushed to the hospital, two of the crew members succumbed to their injuries.
Icon Offshore Berhad has stated that the delay in their public response was due to their coordination with both their client and local authorities. The company has expressed its condolences to the families affected and has offered support. While details of the investigation remain undisclosed, Icon Offshore Berhad indicated that the Icon Amara is expected to return to service following the completion of the investigation.
