President Lee Vows Safety Reforms at Sewol Memorial

During a poignant memorial event marking the 12th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, President Lee Jae Myung pledged to prioritize public safety and prevent future tragedies. Speaking at Hwarang Amusement Park in Ansan, Gyeonggi, Lee expressed his commitment to learning from the past and ensuring that such a catastrophe is never repeated. The Sewol ferry sank on April 16, 2014, resulting in the loss of 299 lives, including many high school students.

Commemoration and Commitment to Safety

President Lee Jae Myung attended the memorial service on April 16, wearing a yellow ribbon—a symbol of remembrance for the victims of the Sewol ferry tragedy. This marks a significant moment as he is the first sitting president to participate in the annual remembrance event. Lee arrived alongside First Lady Kim Hea Kyung, both honoring the memory of those lost in the disaster.

In his address, Lee emphasized the importance of safeguarding lives and reiterated his promise to never forget the lessons learned from the Sewol incident. “I will build a country that protects its people under any circumstances—a state the people can fully trust and rely on,” he stated. His remarks were directed not only to the victims’ families but also to the broader public, aiming to restore trust in government disaster response.

Lee’s attendance was noted as a crucial step in addressing public concerns regarding safety and accountability. “The president’s attendance conveys his message about restoring the public’s trust and bolstering state responsibility for disasters,” said presidential spokesperson Jeon Eun-su. Lee also expressed deep respect for the bereaved families, acknowledging their efforts to advocate for a safer society despite their grief.

Reflections on the Tragedy and Future Actions

The memorial ceremony, themed “A safe nation, beyond promises to responsibility,” began with a moment of silence for the victims, followed by a commemorative video and choir performance. Notably absent from the event were leaders from the conservative People Power Party (PPP), who cited a lack of invitation as the reason for their absence. However, the 4.16 Foundation, which represents the victims’ families, stated that invitations had been sent out a month prior.

As the nation reflects on the tragic events of April 16, 2014, President Lee’s commitment to safety reforms resonates deeply with the public. He vowed to ensure that no lapse in public safety would be tolerated, reinforcing his administration’s dedication to preventing similar disasters in the future. “Once again, I express my deepest condolences. I will remember. I will not forget,” Lee concluded, leaving a lasting message of remembrance and responsibility.
