North Korea Advances Nuclear Submarine Project
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has showcased significant progress in the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine, as revealed by state media images of a nearly finished hull. During a recent shipyard visit, leader Kim Jong Un criticized South Korea’s ambitions to develop similar technology, labeling it an “offensive act” that threatens North Korea’s security. This submarine, described as an 8,700-ton-class vessel, is intended to enhance the North’s naval capabilities and nuclear deterrence.
Kim Jong Un Inspects Submarine Construction
North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Jong Un visited a shipyard to oversee the construction of what is being called a “strategic guided missile submarine.” This vessel is part of Kim’s broader strategy to modernize the North Korean navy and bolster its nuclear arsenal. During his inspection, Kim condemned South Korea’s efforts to acquire its own nuclear-powered submarine, which have received backing from U.S. President Donald Trump. He argued that such developments violate North Korea’s maritime sovereignty and security.
The images released by state media show Kim inspecting a large, burgundy-colored submarine under construction, coated with anti-corrosion paint. This marks the first time since March that North Korean media has shared images of the submarine, which previously only displayed its lower sections. Experts suggest that the visible hull indicates that critical components, including the engine and possibly the reactor, are already installed. Moon Keun-sik, a submarine expert at Hanyang University, noted that the submarine could be ready for sea trials within months, given its current state of construction.
Kim’s ambitions for a nuclear-powered submarine are part of a larger military agenda he outlined in 2021, which includes developing advanced weaponry to counter perceived threats from the U.S. and its allies. The North has conducted various tests to advance its military capabilities, including the recent unveiling of a new naval destroyer aimed at enhancing its nuclear strike capabilities.
Regional Tensions and Military Developments
The potential deployment of a nuclear-powered submarine poses significant concerns for neighboring countries, as such vessels can operate stealthily and launch missiles from underwater, making them difficult to detect. Despite North Korea’s economic challenges and international sanctions, experts speculate that its recent cooperation with Russia may have facilitated access to crucial technologies needed for submarine construction.
In a related context, South Korea is also pursuing its own nuclear-powered submarine program. During a summit with Trump, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung sought U.S. support for this initiative, emphasizing a commitment to increase defense spending. While Trump indicated openness to sharing technology, details regarding the construction timeline and acquisition of nuclear fuel remain unclear.
In a separate development, North Korea conducted a test of a long-range anti-air missile, further escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The South Korean Defense Ministry has yet to comment on this missile launch. As North Korea continues to advance its military capabilities, the region remains on high alert, especially following the breakdown of denuclearization talks in 2019.
