Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Secures Orders for 10 Large Tri-Fuel Vessels
Seaspan Corporation, the world’s largest independent container shipowner and operator, has recently acquired two new 210,000 DWT tri-fuel ore carriers. These vessels were confirmed for construction by the renowned shipbuilder Yangzijiang Shipbuilding. The Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) will charter these vessels on a bareboat basis to provide services to Brazilian mining giant Vale.
New Vessels Details and Features
The 210,000 DWT ore carriers are part of a groundbreaking project as they are the first of their kind to feature a tri-fuel configuration. With a length of 299.95 meters and a beam of 50 meters, these vessels belong to the Newcastlemax class. They are specifically designed for transporting Brazilian iron ore to China and other global destinations. Equipped with various energy-saving devices, these vessels aim to reduce fuel consumption significantly.
The tri-fuel vessels can run on ethanol, methanol, or conventional heavy fuel oil. Moreover, they are designed with provisions for liquefied natural gas (LNG) or ammonia, providing flexibility to adjust fuel strategies based on supply, regulations, and economic conditions. Ethanol, in particular, can dramatically reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to heavy fuel oil, making these vessels environmentally friendly.
HMM Announces Long-Term Shipping Contracts for 8 New Vessels
Vale, the mining giant, has recently signed a long-term shipping contract worth approximately $3.5 billion with South Korean shipping company HMM. This contract covers eight tri-fuel 210,000 DWT bulk carriers that will also be built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding. Scheduled for delivery in batches starting in 2030, these vessels will be equipped with eco-friendly equipment such as rotary sails to maximize energy savings and reduce emissions.
The total value of the eight vessels ordered by HMM amounts to $843 million, with each vessel priced at $105 million. This significant order further strengthens the partnership between Vale and HMM, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and innovation in the shipping industry.
In conclusion, the recent orders for tri-fuel ore carriers signify a significant step towards sustainable and efficient shipping practices. With leading companies investing in advanced technology and environmentally friendly solutions, the maritime industry is poised for a greener and more sustainable future.
